During pregnancy, a woman’s instinctual nature awakens and becomes dominant. She feels the need to prepare herself for the great encounter. She searches for and begins building her nest, an almost sacred and untouchable place that will protect both the new being and herself. The moments of childbirth lead the woman into a visceral and wild state, after which she becomes witness to the unforgettable meeting between herself and her child.
This intensely powerful connection remains forever imprinted in the woman’s heart and psyche. The bond continues to grow and deepen, while the instinctual nature becomes even stronger as the woman is called to protect and nourish her child, witnessing the miracle of transformation both within herself, into the mother-woman, and within the newborn as it develops and changes.
In the project [m]OTHERS, I chose to speak symbolically through painting about the preparation that comes before birth, and especially about the idea of the NEST.
The main work is titled The One Who Carries the Nest ( Cea Care Cara Cuibul) and portrays a woman like a queen, noble, strong, and deeply determined, carrying on her back, without hesitation, the entire weight of the nest. Her steps are hurried because time passes quickly, something emphasized by the surrounding twilight. The grass is fresh and young, just like the pregnancy, as it is only spring, yet summer will soon arrive and continuously ripen the fruit of the woman’s body. She will give birth to a new being with the coming of autumn.
For me, creating images charged with deep personal meaning helps channel my energy toward the direction I wish for and even produces the effects I hope for. Visualising and painting these images has an almost shamanic role: clarifying priorities, directing energies, building something new, connecting with the deeper self, and even healing.
The [m]OTHERS project appeared in my life alongside a new pregnancy, one I consider both miraculous and healing. It would come to an end with the arrival of autumn, through birth, in parallel with the project itself, which concluded with an exhibition presenting only works created during this extraordinary period of motherhood.
